Guanacaste is the northwestern province of Costa Rica. The province covers an area of 10,141 km², the provincial capital is Liberia. Guanacaste is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean. The northern border is the border with Nicaragua. Eastern neighboring province of Alajuela, and Puntarenas southeast.
Because of the relatively dry climate, Guanacaste is the center of the Costa Rican cattle. The Golfo de Papagayo on the Pacific coast is the main development area of tourism. On this location, large hotels created mainly for North American package tourists.
Today tourism has emerged as the new and growing activity in the local economy. The combination of beautiful beaches like Playa Tamarindo and the sun-drenched dry season that coincides with the winter months in northern latitudes have made tourism the most lucrative revenue. A lot of tourist are also attracted by the abundance of natural beauty. Guanacaste have three national parks in the province:
* The Santa Rosa National Park,
* The Guanacaste National Park and
* The National Park Rincón de la Vieja.
